Call To Action
Tennessee Sanctuary City Bill

May 10, 2018

Tennessee #HB2315 is a mass deportation bill. It would force local law enforcement to comply with ICE. It would violate both the federal and TN constitutions.

Please call Governor Haslam of Tennessee to VETO HB2315. He has until May 22 to veto the bill.
Please call: (615) 741-2001 and ask the Governor to veto this unconstitutional bill.

On April 25 House Bill 2315 and companion Senate Bill 2332 passed 64-to-23 in the House of Representatives and 27-to-5 in Senate. If this bill becomes law, it could have serious implications for public safety and future economic opportunities for the state.

Here’s what it does:

*Prevents cities and counties from enacting sanctuary city policies to protect undocumented immigrants from detention by federal officials

*Would have allowed residents to file complaints about real or perceived lack of enforcement to the Attorney General’s Office (the final legislation made it a chancery court process)

*Cuts off state economic and community development money from local communities that enact sanctuary city policies

*Would have required local law enforcement agencies to sign memorandums of understanding with federal immigration officials and obligated them to enforce federal law (the final bill eventually cut the MOU).

Please make the call and share with your family and friends. We must stand up for our at risk communities and our Constitution.

Duke Energy
Greensboro Tornado

April 18, 2018

Most of the South East side of Greensboro was severely impacted from the tornado few days ago. Most communities electricity is out due to trees falling on power lines. Certain communities which are predominantly black are dealing with extra burden because of lack of resources. In addition, Duke Energy has been slow in restoring their electricity. Their lack of urgency to restore electricity in these communities has been disappointing and disturbing. One neighbor who wants to stay anonymous told one of our team members that Duke Energy told this person that it was not safe for them work there 24 hours. This is unacceptable and racist.

Please call Duke Energy corporate office and demand for an immediate emergency response to these communities in restoring electricity. Ask for 24 hours team to be present in restoring electricity. In addition, please call the Governor’s office to lodge an official complaint about Duke Energy.

The affected areas are as follows. South East part of Greensboro. Claremont Area. From North English to South English. From Benbow road to Phillis avenue.

Call Duke Energy headquarters at 1-704-594-6200. You may have to speak with an operator to reach a member of the corporate team. Ask for the following executive team.

Somali Immigrants human rights abuse

April 10, 2018

In December of 2017, ICE officials put 92 Somali detainees on a plane back to their home country, in shackles and chained to their seats. The plane mysteriously turned around in Senegal and came back to Miami, and during this time were allegedly brutally beaten, verbally abused, and forced to relieve themselves in their seats. These detainees described the hellish trip as having “slave ship” conditions.

They have been held in ICE detention centers ever since, where they have been subject to physical abuse, racial slurs, unsanitary conditions and medical neglect, according to their lawyers, who have filed a lawsuit on their behalf, asking that their deportation cases be reopened or dismissed. The lawsuit remains open. Local community members and activists are demanding that these ICE agents be taken to account for their actions.

We stand with these detainees who have had their human rights so grievously violated. We demand that the ICE agents who committed these crimes be brought to justice. These abuses clearly exist because of and within the larger context of anti-black and anti-Muslim rhetoric and policy that has allowed such state violence to carry on unchecked for far long already. It is especially distressing that these black Africans were chained and shipped overseas in such a brutal and horrific manner that echoes the stories we know of the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade, a sin that has haunted and poisoned this country’s institutional and societal structures since before its birth. We ask that you call your federal representatives and demand that they stand up for human rights, for accountability, and against these horrible crimes that are happening under the supervision of a federal agency.

Promote Human Rights For Palestinian Children

January 31, 2018

Palestinian activist, Ahed Tamimi is turning 17 years old in an Israeli prison today. The ill treatment of Palestinian child detainees by Israeli forces is widespread, systematic, and institutionalized throughout the Israeli military detention system. Take action today: Contact your representatives to tell them to support HR 4391 to hold Israel responsible for its abuses of Palestinian children’s rights.

Hi,
I am a constituent of Representative _______________ and I am calling to ask [him/her] to support H.R. 4391 to promote Human Rights by Ending Israeli Military Detention of Palestinian Children Act, H.R. 4391. This legislation is to prevent United States tax dollars from supporting the Israeli military’s ongoing detention and mistreatment of Palestinian children. An estimated 10,000 Palestinian children have been detained by Israeli security forces and prosecuted in the Israeli military court system since 2000. Independent monitors such as Human Rights Watch have documented that these children are subject to abuse and, in some cases, torture — specifically citing the use of chokeholds, beatings, and coercive interrogation on children between the ages of 11 and 15. In addition, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has found that Palestinian children are frequently held for extended periods without access to either their parents or attorneys.
Please support H.R. 4391.
Thank you.

This bill was introduced in November of 2017 by Congresswoman Betty McCollum to promote human rights for Palestinian children. She said earlier, “this legislation highlights Israel’s system of military detention of Palestinian children and ensures that no American assistance to Israel supports human rights violations,” Congresswoman McCollum said. “Peace can only be achieved by respecting human rights, especially the rights of children. Congress must not turn a blind eye the unjust and ongoing mistreatment of Palestinian children living under Israeli occupation.”

Urgent Call for Action for Rohingya in Myanmar aka Burma

More than 600,000 Muslim Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh since late August, driven out by a military ethnic cleansing operation in Buddhist majority Myanmar’s Rakhine State. The Rohingya Muslims are being subject to genocide and displacement forcing them to flee Burmese military atrocities committed in Rohingya in Rakhine state.

The refugee camps and makeshift settlements in Bangladesh’s Cox Bazar are overcrowded, and aid agencies are struggling to supply food and essential items. U.N. agencies warned that children and women are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition, gender-based violence and sexual and reproductive-health problems.

U.N. Secretary General António Guterres said that the situation has spiraled into the world’s “fastest developing refugee emergency, and a humanitarian and human rights nightmare.”

We also call the International community to recognize that Aung San Suu Kyi should not be given any recognition as a political dissident and her to be stripped of her Nobel Peace Prize, for failing to act to stop mass killings and displacements of Rohingya Muslims.

Please call and write and demand the following:

* United States must join China’s call today for a ceasefire in Myanmar’s Rakhine State so that Rohingya Muslim refugees can return from Bangladesh, proposing a three-stage approach to the crisis as diplomats from 51 mostly Asian and European countries gathered in Myanmar.

* Demand the Myanmar government put an immediate stop to all military-and-mob-led violence targeting the Rohingya Muslim minority.

* Demand the Myanmar government permit United Nation’s investigators to inspect affected Rohingya areas in Myanmar.

* Ensure that governments of Myanmar and Bangladesh enable the free flow of emergency relief aid to Rohingya Muslims.

Contact information:

* Contact the U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson [phone: 202-647-2663]

* U.S. Ambassador to Burma Scot Marciel [phone: (95)-(1) 536-509]
