Please call, write and set up a group meeting with your US Senators and your district US Congressman or Congresswoman. Urge Congress to pass a $4.6 billion emergency funding package includes nearly $3 billion to care for unaccompanied refugee/migrant children. In addition, Congress must pass resolution to allow legal experts, healthcare professionals and human rights advocates to have access to facilities where children are being held.

According to report, access has been denied to speak with the children quarantined in special cells for those with flu at Clint.  Children at Clint told the Human Rights Watch that they don’t have regular access to showers or clean clothes, with some saying they hadn’t been allowed to bath over periods of weeks and don’t have regular access to soap.

The Trump administration argued last week in front of 9th Circuit court that the government is not required to give soap or toothbrushes to children apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border and can have them sleep on concrete floors in frigid, overcrowded cells, despite a settlement agreement that requires detainees be kept in “safe” and sanitary” facilities.

The current conditions of children held at government facilities are overcrowded, and five immigrant children have died since late last year after being detained by Customs and Border Protection. It has been reported by AP that a teenage mother with a premature baby was found last week in a Texas Border Patrol processing center after being held for nine days by the government.

In an interview this week with the AP, acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner John Sanders acknowledged that children need better medical care and a place to recover from their illnesses. He urged Congress to pass a $4.6 billion emergency funding package includes nearly $3 billion to care for unaccompanied migrant children.

The Border Patrol claims that high numbers of border arrivals are causing these delays as they wait for space to open up in the somewhat more child-friendly detention centers and shelters run by the Office of Refugee Resettlement at US Health and Human Services. Based on HRW interviews, officials seem to be making no effort to release children to caregivers – and many have parents in the US – rather than holding them for weeks in overcrowded cells sleeping on concrete floors. Nearly all of the children Clara Long of HRW spoke with had been held without any communication from desperate parents.
